Jan Hartwig

Jan Hartwig is chef de cuisine at Restaurant Atelier, the three-Michelin starred fine diner at Munich’s historic Hotel Bayerischer Hof. In addition to being the only three-star in Munich, Restaurant Atelier climbed to the top of Michelin’s rankings in just four years: a testament to Hartwig’s time at Germany’s finest restaurant. While Hartwig’s cooking is modern and precise: he’s also mindful of dining’s golden rule: “The guest should have fun during dinner.” Here’s where he has fun when he’s home in Munich.

Fine-Dining, Wining And Drinking

I like the Landersdorfer & Innerhofer because it’s the perfect mixture of high-quality gastronomy, fine wines and fair prices.  It’s wonderful service in a relaxed, cosy and casual atmosphere. If chefs are visiting Munich, this is where I always take them. Other hotel venues I really like are Ory, the beautifuil cocktail bar at the Mandarin Oriental, and fine-dining restaurant Schwarzreiter Tagesbar at Kempinski Munich.

Munich’s Best Beer Gardens

I live around the corner from Biergarten Viktualienmarkt. It’s a big, beautiful beer garden in the heart of Munich. There are beautiful trees, which make it feel cosy, and it’s the perfect place to go with a group of friends. Augustiner Keller is a huge beer garden that I like to take friends who are visiting Munich to. It’s the third largest beer garden in Munich and opened in 1812, so there’s a lot of history here.

Classic Bavarian Cuisine

Zum Vaas is the perfect mixture of a traditional Bavarian restaurant and high-quality gastronomy with a beautiful garden. The owners are siblings Veronika and Johannes, which worked in the restaurant Schlosshotel Lehrbach under the leadership of Dieter Müller. They really know what they’re doing, and they do it in a very easy way. I go to Beim Sedlmayr for traditional German cuisine and Bavarian dishes.

The Best Beer And Schintzel

In my opinion, the Gasthaus Isarthor is the restaurant with the best beer – Augustiner beer in wooden barrels – in all of Munich, and it has my beloved schnitzel cordon bleu.

Local And Casual

I really like the doner kebab from Türkitch. Loretta Bar is a great café during the day and turns into a bar in the evening. It’s a popular place for locals.

Addresses For Italian Food

Dal Cavaliere is a great Italian restaurant for lunch or dinner. I like the staff and it has a great, great terrace. I also like the pizzeria nineOfive for great pizza and fine wines from young and nice people.

After-Service Drinks

If I’m going out for a drink or something to eat after service with my kitchen staff, we go to Lux Bar, Ayinger am Platzl or Grapes Weinbar. Grapes Weinbar is a very nice bar-restaurant for unique wines and fantastic food. I also know the entire staff very well.
