It’s fair to say that 1970 was a big year for Heinz and Margarethe Reitbauer. Not only did the Reitbauers open their restaurant, Steirereck, in Vienna: they also gave birth to son, Heinz Jnr. Almost 50 years on and both milestones have come together with Heinz Junior and wife Birgit now in charge of the family’s fine diner. Today, the Reitbauers’ Stadtpark restaurant isn’t just celebrated as one of the great dining rooms in Austria, but on the planet with Steirereck currently ranked in the top 10 of the influential World’s 50 Best Restaurants.

Nice People And Natural Wine

I think the Viennese restaurant scene has become more relaxed. There are a lot of new, very small restaurants and bars opening up, and a lot to be discovered. One of these is MAST: a small, chic wine bar and restaurant. Here, there are nice people, good cuisine and a great wine list with a focus on natural wines.

Market-Fresh Food In A Beautiful Setting

Heunisch & Erben is in a beautiful space by the Wien mitte railway station. They have quite a large wine selection, and the cuisine is very fresh and seasonal. 

A Neighbourhood Restaurant With Grace

My former sous-chef Oliver Lucas opened his own place called Grace together with his wife Petra (who is running the floor). The restaurant is on a calm side street in the 4th district, with a lovely small terrace. It’s a great place where you are able to enjoy wonderful and creative food in a very relaxed atmosphere.

Friends (And Colleagues) Who Become Family

When there are special moments in your life, you want to share or celebrate them with people you feel comfortable with. People who are not only friends and family, but also colleagues.

For me, these people are Konstantin Fillipou, Silvio Nickol and the Mraz family, who are all very wonderful chefs with great restaurants. They are all totally different from each other in the way they work and cook. At Restaurant Konstantin Filippou, Konstantin loves to surprise us every time with creative dishes, and his tasteful and elegant handwriting on the plate.

Silvio offers grand cuisine in his restaurant at the gorgeous Palais Coburg in an impressive setting with an outstanding wine cellar. At Mraz & Sohn, the Mraz family – the father and his two sons – are working together so well, are extremely creative and with them a good joke is never amiss.

Wonderful Wine, Spectacular City Views

To enjoy good food and wine with friends, we love to visit the wine taverns (Heuriger) on the outskirts of Vienna at the Nussberg (one of Vienna’s most beautiful wine-growing regions).  Wieninger am Nussberg and Heurigen Wailand are both lovely places overlooking the whole city with great wines and simple, but very good food.

To Celebrate The Big Milestones

We love to hold our family events and celebrations either at restaurant Sodoma in Tulln, or at restaurant Floh in Langenlebarn (around a 30-minute and 40-minute car drive from Vienna, respectively). Both are wonderful, family-run restaurants with very good food and perfect wine pairings.
