Mirazur. Menton. France

Mauro Colagreco

Mauro Colagreco may have been born in La Plata near Buenos Aries, but it was 11000 kilometres away on the French Riviera where the Argentine chef made his name. After working with French cooking royalty Alain Ducasse and Alain Passard in Paris, he relocated to Menton – the final town on the Riviera before the Italian border – to open Mirazur in 2006. Today, Colagreco’s seaside dining room is considered one of the world’s finest restaurants and is the holder of, among many other accolades, three Michelin stars as well as the title of World’s 50 Best World’s Best Restaurant.

My Favourite Restaurant In Menton

My favourite restaurant in Menton is Le Petit Port, a Mediterranean restaurant which serves fresh produce and fish. It’s a family-style bistro owned by Gabi and Lisa who are both very welcoming. It has a beautiful atmosphere and the inside seating has an open view of the kitchen so you can watch the chefs work. I like to sit on their terrace, and always order the fish and seafood, freshly caught from the bay.

Casual Dining With Nice Flavours

La Merenda, a restaurant which specialises in Niçoise cuisine, is a long-time favourite of mine. It has fantastic food with a relaxed, informal atmosphere. It’s the place to go to enjoy one of the best stockfish – a soup made with sundried fish – on the French Riviera.

For Something More Casual

When chefs or friends come to visit me in Menton, I love to take them to our pizzeria Pecora Negra. It’s at the port, so it has beautiful views of the harbour. The pizzas are made using ancient wheat flour. The Genovese pizza is made with pesto from our friend in Genoa and is considered one of the best pestos in the world. My wife, Julia, loves the three-cheese pizza. It’s her favourite and is made with 36-month-old Comte and a local goat’s cheese from Anne-Marie Curti.

Where I Relax With Friends

I like to relax with friends at Riviera Playa on Cap-Martin which has a beautiful beach setting. Otherwise, you might find me at the Blue Gin Bar at Monaco Bay which has great sea views. It’s quite laid back with music and good cocktails.

Special Occasion Dining

For special occasions, I visit Le Louis XV, Alain Ducasse’s restaurant at Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo, or Hostellerie Jérôme in the medieval village of La Turbie which is around 20 minutes by car from the centre of Menton.

A Classic Ligurian Restaurant Across The Border

Set on the beach, La Spiaggetta dei Balzi Rossi is a great restaurant in Ventimiglia just over the border in Italy and is a good option for lunch or dinner. It serves typical Ligurian dishes with lots of fresh fish.
